Woody Creek 70/30 Bourbon: A Bourbon Lover’s New Favorite
When it comes to bourbon, I’m always looking for something with character—a spirit that tells its own story, but doesn’t take itself too seriously. Woody Creek 70/30 Bourbon is just that. Produced in the heart of Colorado, this small-batch bourbon is made with local grains and Rocky Mountain water, bringing a unique sense of place to every sip.
What Makes It Special?

The name gives you a clue—70/30 Bourbon refers to its mash bill: 70% corn and 30% rye. That mix brings a nice balance between the sweeter, smoother corn notes and the spicy kick from the rye. Aged for at least four years in new American oak barrels, it’s not your typical one-dimensional bourbon; this one has layers of flavor that keep evolving as you sip it.
Tasting It for the First Time

When you pour yourself a glass, you’ll immediately notice its beautiful amber color. On the nose, it opens with vanillaand caramel, which are pretty classic for bourbon, but there’s also a spicy undertone—thanks to that rye—along with a subtle hint of oak. When you taste it, the sweetness of the caramel and honey hits first, but then the rye spice comes in with a little bit of cinnamon and baking spices.
It’s smooth but still bold enough to remind you it’s a proper bourbon. The finish is long and warm, with some oak and even a slight nuttiness—like toasted oats. It leaves you with a lingering spice, which I personally love in a good bourbon.

How It Stands Up to the Hype
Woody Creek takes pride in their craft, and the distillery’s attention to detail really comes through. They use only locally sourced Colorado corn and rye, which is pretty cool, and everything is distilled, aged, and bottled right there in their facility
Woody Creek Distillers

What I appreciate is that they don’t just tell you about their process—they really stick to it, and you can taste the quality. They even use Rocky Mountain water in the distillation, which adds a unique freshness to the spirit.
The fact that it’s aged for at least four years also makes a difference. While it’s not as heavy as some older bourbons, it’s got enough age to develop complexity, without overpowering you with oak.

How to Enjoy It
Here’s where the fun starts. While this bourbon is great neat or on the rocks, it also shines in cocktails. The rye spice gives it enough bite to hold up in classic bourbon cocktails, while the sweetness rounds it out perfectly.
My Top Cocktail Pick: Whiskey A Go-Go

This cocktail is perfect for summer, combining the bourbon’s boldness with the refreshing fizz of spiced ginger ale and a hint of citrus.
Ingredients:

  • 1.5 oz Woody Creek 70/30 Bourbon
  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 4 dashes cherry bitters
  • 4 oz spiced orange ginger ale
  • Orange wheel garnish

Instructions: Add the bourbon, lemon juice, and bitters to a glass filled with ice, top it off with the ginger ale, and stir gently. Garnish with the orange wheel. The result is a perfectly balanced, refreshing drink where the bourbon shines but doesn’t overpower.

The combination of lemon juice, spiced ginger ale, and the bourbon’s depth works beautifully. The ginger ale plays off the rye spice, while the lemon adds a refreshing citrus note that brightens everything up. It’s a perfect cocktail for warmer days when you want something with both body and freshness.
If you’re a fan of more classic cocktails, Woody Creek 70/30 is also fantastic in an Old Fashioned or a Boulevardier. The rye gives those drinks an extra layer of complexity that I think bourbon lovers will appreciate.

For me, Woody Creek 70/30 Bourbon is more than just a great spirit—it’s a bourbon that delivers both in terms of flavor and versatility. Whether you're enjoying it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, it holds its own and brings something special to the table.
What I love most is how it captures the essence of Colorado with its local ingredients, yet feels right at home in classic bourbon cocktails. It’s the kind of bourbon I’d recommend to anyone looking to elevate their home bar.
